Description: Born in 2002 in Carlsbad, New Mexico, the Artist Chloe Spradling grew up surrounded by family professionally involved with nature and animals in diverse ways. These early influences instilled a deep-seated appreciation for the natural world from a young age and encouraged the artist to think about the world around her.
Fable Bodies is a collection of works honoring and introspecting on humanities relationship with animals and the natural world. Before God took the form of a man, all humans had was the other living beings around them. Early human spiritualism involved adopting the guises of animals to connect with the divine. Like in Aesop’s fables, animals are living vehicles for meaning. They are symbols, signs, omens, and our neighbors. They drive our mythology; they get cut up and put back together in our highway sideshows and for our exhibitions. We have painted them on cave walls and carved them into sacred stones. We invent animals, such as cryptids, when we see or feel something we can’t understand.
Chloe’s work attempts to capture snapshots of personal poetry, a ritualistic way to document her inner monologue. Animals are often the makeup of that poetry. The animals around Spradling have given her the language necessary to create art, so in Fable Bodies she honors them.
