Description: The series “Flowers” started as a value shape demonstration in my painting class. The large Gladiola is a larger version of that small demonstration piece. It explores large scale, value shapes and modulation of edges. I have gone back to 500-year-old techniques of charcoal, drawing underpainting and buildup of translucent layers with no grid or mechanical means of projection being used, just freehand drawing and painting. The series explores abstraction in nature, as did the work of Georgia O’Keefe. By making the paintings large scale, I want to, as Georgia O’Keeffe said, let the flower become an entire world for a moment. A large part of the problem I set for myself was to explore à la prima painting in the tradition of Velasquez, Hal’s, Impressionists, Abstract Expressionism and many others with the physicality of the paint revealed rather than concealed by careful blending. There is also an interest in the surface of the paint itself and it’s association with paintings of the 20th century.
