This workshop introduces the Swiss Cheese Model to help faculty identify gaps in student support. Using collaborative brainstorming, scenarios, and student survey data, participants will develop actionable strategies to enhance student persistence and completion by recognizing how they can be one of multiple layers of support that can work together to prevent students from "falling through the holes".

This presentation aims to equip dual credit faculty with effective strategies for maintaining clear, professional, and timely communication with high school partners, P-16 Initiatives, and their academic departments at Houston Community College (HCC). The program covers essential touchpoints, including the roles of Dual Credit Pathway Advisors, and high school liaisons, as well as practical guidance on handling Early Alerts grade reporting, and classroom concerns.
By the end of the session, faculty members will have an understanding of the role Dual Credit Pathway Advisors play to assist students with their educational journey to ensure retentiona and completion.

This presentation aims to equip dual credit faculty with effective strategies for maintaining clear, professional, and timely communication with high school partners, P-16 Initiatives, and their academic departments at Houston Community College (HCC). The program covers essential touchpoints, including the roles of high school liaisons and their P-16 team, as well as practical guidance on handling roster discrepancies, grade reporting, and classroom concerns.
A portion of the presentation focuses on FERPA compliance, emphasizing the importance of protecting dual credit students' privacy while collaborating with the high school liaisons in ensuring their academic success. By the end of the session, faculty members will have a comprehensive understanding of how to foster positive communication, ensure adherence to institutional and legal protocols, and contribute to the success of dual credit programs.

Lonica Bush - Manager, Title IX
Title IX is a federal law, enacted in 1972, stating that no person on the basis of sex shall be “excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The 2020 Federal Title IX Regulations cover sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. In addition, the Texas Education Code §51.982 protects pregnant and parenting students from discrimination and mandates accommodation for students. This session will cover students’ rights and show them how to file a complaint with the Office of Equal Opportunity for investigation and remedy.
